What you should know about this house

Amenities and special features of this house

The Castle of San Giorgio is one of the oldest architectural artefacts in the territory. Built before the region was called Monferrato, the castle as a whole is one thousand two hundred years old, and the central tower is the original nucleus that belonged to a system of watchtowers dating back to the period when the territory was part of the Holy Roman Empire. All the main families that have inhabited it over time, such as the Aleramici, Paleologi, Gonzaga and Gozani, have left their historical testimony, so that today the Castle has a particularly precious architectural stratification: from the Foundation period to the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque and Risorgimento. Today the Castle is an Italian Historical Architectural Heritage Site and the oldest in Monferrato. Built on five above-ground storeys, plus attic and tower for a total of about 4300 square metres of floor space and more than 5000 covered (the difference between the two measurements is given by the thickness of the ancient walls), the property also has an Italian-style garden, a small hanging garden, two majestic panoramic terraces with views sweeping from the plains to the Alpine arc, and a centuries-old park of about 3.6 hectares. Worthy of note is the typical medieval wine cellar dug into the rock known as Infernot. The structure is also well preserved thanks to the careful renovation work carried out by the current owner. In fact, there are still original decorations from past eras, frescoes, doors and floors in wood, stone and Venetian seminato. Currently, the owners manage the present activities, such as B&B, cultural events, guided tours and a calendar of events in synergy with the territory and its cultural, tourist and food and wine excellences.

San Giorgio Monferrato: Location and surroundings of this property

San Giorgio Monferrato is located in Basso Monferrato, in the north-western part of the province of Alessandria, between the municipalities of Ozzano Monferrato, Casale Monferrato and Rosignano Monferrato. The village is 4 km from the state road 457 to Moncalvo, while the Casale Monferrato Sud exit, which leads to the A26 Voltri-Gravellona Toce motorway, is 8 km away. Milan/Malpensa airport, used for direct intercontinental connections, is 88 km away; the regional capital is 105 km away. The port is 115 km away. It relies on Casale Monferrato for all services and bureaucratic-administrative structures that are not available locally. The beautiful landscape that surrounds it, the possibility of making pleasant excursions into nature and tasting the local culinary specialities are reason enough to attract more and more tourists to this area, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014. San Giorgio Monferrato is located in a strategic geographical position, about 80 km from Milan, Turin and Genoa. There are two golf courses just a few kilometres from the town.
