Quarto dei Mille, owes its name to its location on the fourth mile from Genoa along the medieval road, today called "Via Antica Romana", which led towards the Eastern Riviera and Tuscany
The area was inhabited by farmers, fishermen and was home to holiday palaces. From this location, on the night between 5 and 6 May 1860, the expedition of the Thousand led by Giuseppe Garibaldi left and headed for Marsala. On the head in front of the rock from where Garibaldi set off, the monument commemorating the expedition was erected in 1915, the work of the sculptor Eugenio Baroni.
Quarto dei Mille is home to a pediatric hospital known throughout Europe: the Giannina Gaslini Institute. There are also some beaches that are very popular during the summer season.
