The Venice Biennale cinema, in fact, has a long history of eighty years which makes it, after the Oscar, the oldest film event in the world: the first edition was in fact celebrated in 1932. Even then the venue was the Lido, first at the 'Hotel Excelsior and from the late thirties to the Palazzo del Cinema which were joined by the Palazzo del Casinò and the PalaBiennale.
The biggest names on the international scene have passed through here since the early years. In 1937 the spotlight was on Marlene Dietrich, while in the immediate postwar period Rita Hayworth landed at the Lido together with Anna Magnani. The 1950s saw stars of the caliber of Marlon Brando and Brigitte Bardot on the parade as well as the Italians Gina Lollobrigida and Sophia Loren. Thanks to the institution of the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement, Dustin Hoffman, Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Francis Ford Coppola also landed on the Lido, while one of the first unforgettable ones was in 1999 that of Eyes Wide Shut with the presence of one of the couples most famous films of all time, Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise.
Venice film festival is also synonymous with international cinema from emerging countries in the field of cinema. In the fifties, in fact, it will be the International Film Festival to clear the customs of the great Japanese directors by awarding Akira Kurosawa and Kenji Mizoguchi, but also names that have become true icons such as the Swedish Ingmar Bergman or the German Wim Wenders or even inaugurating, thanks to the his acknowledgments, real currents such as the French Nouvelle Vague launched by the works of Claude Chabrol presented in the Lagoon. A feature that the Venice Film Biennale has maintained throughout its history: the jury also discovered and awarded the Chinese Zhang Yimou and the Spanish Pedro Almodóvar, but also Spike Lee, Gus Van Sant and Sofia Coppola.
