The Venice Film Festival

Let's get to know the Venice film festival in progress on the Lido better: history, curiosities and places to experience until 10 September 2022

The  Venice Biennale Cinema is also universally known as the Venice film exhibition. And here the first curiosity because although this is the term most used together with Venice film festival, it is actually used erroneously. The full name is in fact the International Film Festival organized every year by the Venice Biennale. The director has been Alberto Barbera since 2012, who had already led the review between 1999 and 2001. The exhibition includes several sections: in the official selection there are Venezia 79, Fuori Concorso, Orizzonti, Biennale College - Cinema, Venezia Classici which every year welcome 140 different titles. The autonomous and parallel sections, organized according to their own regulations, include the International Critics' Week and the Days of the Authors. This is the general structure of an exhibition that every year brings some of the most celebrated stars not only in Italy but all over the world to parade on the red carpet of the Lido.

The Venice Biennale cinema, in fact, has a long history of eighty years which makes it, after the Oscar, the oldest film event in the world: the first edition was in fact celebrated in 1932. Even then the venue was the Lido, first at the 'Hotel Excelsior and from the late thirties to the Palazzo del Cinema which were joined by the Palazzo del Casinò and the PalaBiennale.

The biggest names on the international scene have passed through here since the early years. In 1937 the spotlight was on Marlene Dietrich, while in the immediate postwar period Rita Hayworth landed at the Lido together with Anna Magnani. The 1950s saw stars of the caliber of Marlon Brando and Brigitte Bardot on the parade as well as the Italians Gina Lollobrigida and Sophia Loren. Thanks to the institution of the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement, Dustin Hoffman, Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Francis Ford Coppola also landed on the Lido, while one of the first unforgettable ones was in 1999 that of Eyes Wide Shut with the presence of one of the couples most famous films of all time, Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise.

Venice film festival is also synonymous with international cinema from emerging countries in the field of cinema. In the fifties, in fact, it will be the International Film Festival to clear the customs of the great Japanese directors by awarding Akira Kurosawa and Kenji Mizoguchi, but also names that have become true icons such as the Swedish Ingmar Bergman or the German Wim Wenders or even inaugurating, thanks to the his acknowledgments, real currents such as the French Nouvelle Vague launched by the works of Claude Chabrol presented in the Lagoon. A feature that the Venice Film Biennale has maintained throughout its history: the jury also discovered and awarded the Chinese Zhang Yimou and the Spanish Pedro Almodóvar, but also Spike Lee, Gus Van Sant and Sofia Coppola.

The beauty of the Venice film festival is also contained in its relationship with the city with the stars who do not miss the opportunity to stroll through the streets and the public who, in turn, can participate in the screenings in a calendar that satisfies the great fans. but it also knows how to appeal to newbies.
