South of Porches, on a prominent promontory that rises imposingly over the sea, is the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Rocha. Built in the 15th century, but with older origins from the High Middle Ages as suggested by the Corinthian capitals of the 3rd/4th centuries, there are two spaces: the narthex, open by a triple archway, and the quadrangular main space, covered by an octave dome. Inside there is an image of Our Lady with the Child and a Mannerist altarpiece.
Its privileged and dominant location on the coast has led this site fortification since the XVIth century. From the military fortress that once existed there, with a polygonal plan, moat and drawbridge, there are just a few vestiges remaining.
Perfect viewpoint for the entire coastline, between the beautiful and welcoming beaches of Nossa Senhora da Rocha and Praia Nova, we can glimpse the coast to east till Faro and west till Lagos bay. In the surrounding cliffs we can observe the typical vegetation and several birds that take refuge there. Connected with the fishing activity and the prayers of the fishermen, from the cliff where the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Rocha stands, we can still observe the boats that today also take tourists to discover isolated beaches and caves open by the sea.
