Center: Location and surroundings of this property

The “Palacio Lapido” or Palace of the Popular Tribune is one of the first important buildings of modern architecture in Uruguay. The project started in 1929 and was finished in 1933. It is a multifunctional building, designed by the architect Juan Aubriot and presents a good example of the Uruguayan international architectural renovation of the first decades of the 20th century. Since 1989 it is part of the national heritage of Uruguay.
“Centro”, where Palacio Lapido is located, is a neighborhood of Montevideo whose axis is Avenida 18 de Julio, from Plaza Independencia to Calle Ejido. It originates in what was formerly known as New Town, which referred to urban development beyond the already non-existent walls of the old colonial urbanization: the Old City (ciudad vieja).
The great concentration of services, public and private offices, shops, cinemas and theaters, make it one of the most lively areas of the city.
