Villa Serrana is a small town hidden between the mountains that was born between the streams Penitente and Marmarajá, thanks to the imagination and studies of Julio Vilamajó, a famous Uruguayan architect who took care of all the landscape details when designing the construction of the hotel. For his work, he basically used materials from the surrounding area which is highly characterized by its fauna, a wide variety of species: birds, reptiles, mammals, and many more. The area of Villa Serrana is geographically characterized for being of high relief in the south, with saws, hills and wide valleys and plain area towards the north. It provides hills and boulders that are often granite. It comes with a very well distributed hydrographic network that can be divided into two basins: the Santa Lucia River that irrigates the entire Southern region, and the central one with the Cebollatí River, partially enclosed by the Cuchilla Grande, which covers the entire northern area and central of the department.
