Upgrade your lifestyle: what to consider when moving to a bigger house

The late, great Gianni Versace once said, "I think people live better in big houses." Whether it’s due to a growing family or simply the desire to stretch your legs, there are many reasons to upgrade to a larger living space. Yet along with the privilege of a spacious clean slate comes the responsibility of furnishing your new property. Here are a few factors to keep in mind as you start the process of buying a bigger home.

Don’t rush into décor

It’s all too easy to go overboard when moving to a bigger house, caught up in the excitement of suddenly having so many rooms to play with. Before you start buying furniture, be sure that all financial paperwork has been fully approved. Look at your space as a long-term investment, giving yourself time to set the rhythms of your new home life.

Determine which furnishings to move with you

Moving provides the opportunity for a fresh start, but this needn’t mean that you have to throw out all your old furnishings. However, you will need to assess your existing furniture with a curatorial eye to determine which pieces make the cut. Full bedroom sets may simply not fit into a larger space in the same way. Instead, look at individual pieces and consider them out of context, keeping those that you truly enjoy. Breathe new life into an old home office desk by placing it in the entryway, or transition your vintage bedroom wardrobe into statement storage for kitchen crockery.

Focus on the most frequently used living spaces

You may not have the time or budget to furnish the entire house immediately upon moving in, but you do want a functional living space. Set a budget that focuses first on practical issues that need upgrading in your new property, from electrical fixtures to plumbing. After this, you can work on furnishing primary living spaces in the home. The bedrooms, kitchen and bathrooms need your attention before you set to work on the guest room or breakfast nook.

Experiment with visual flow

Moving to a bigger house often signifies finding a forever home, or at least an abode that you plan to spend a few years in. You should give your décor the careful consideration that this situation deserves, experimenting with layouts, textures and colour palettes to find the perfect fit. Move your furnishings into different arrangements, pinning down a fundamental focal point for the room before adding the finer details and layers of interest.

Highlight open spaces

It’s tempting to fill all of that empty space with tapestries and side tables, yet one of the benefits of buying a bigger home is more breathing room. While a small apartment may be stuffed with objects out of necessity, moving to a bigger house means you have space to spare. Let it speak for itself by emphasising blank spaces. Consider adopting an open-concept minimalist style with washes of stark white and soft cream, punctuated by a few splashes of colour or vibrant botanical accents.
