Kantia. A small village on the coast, Kantia is situated 17 kilometers from Nafplion, halfway between Drepano and Iria. Following the Greek Revolution of 1821, it was originally settled by Cretan and Arcadian refugees under the name Kantia, a reference to the Venetian Island of Crete. Though initially primarily pastoralists, these settlers eventually made a permanent home there and started fishing. The ruins of the Mycenaean Acropolis of Candia can be found behind the Agia Eleusa hill, along with the Tower of Aga, a half-completed tower house that served as the local Aga's residence. Due in part to its lovely beach, abundance of hotels and rental rooms, as well as beach bars for entertainment, the village is a well-liked tourist destination. Every year on July 1st, the community celebrates the Feast of Agioi Anargyroi with traditional music, dance, and cuisine.
