Rafina is located on the eastern coast of Attica and is the second largest port in the region after Piraeus, with significant traffic to the Cyclades. In recent years, Rafina has experienced substantial development and has essentially become a suburb of Athens, thanks to the Attiki Odos which improved access from the city center as it connects with Marathon Avenue in neighboring Pikermi. It is approximately 25 km from Athens. The main road of Eastern Attica, Marathon Avenue, crosses it to the west, while Am. Fleming Avenue starts from Marathon Avenue and ends a short distance in the city center and the port. The city covers an area of 19,000 acres and its population amounts to 12,168 inhabitants according to the 2011 Census, while in the summer months it reaches 30,000-50,000. It is densely populated in the center near the port but has large areas with parks and green spaces as well as two large beaches; the first next to the port and the second, the popular Marikes Beach in the Avlaki area to the south. It borders to the north with Mati, to the south with Artemida, and to the east it is washed by the South Euboean Gulf. Kallitechnoupoli and Neos Voutzas are the two large peripheral neighborhoods of Rafina west of Marathon Avenue at the foothills of Penteli. In these areas, many holiday homes as well as permanent residences are built.
