Santa Maria Maior is the heart of Lisbon. This parish is home to the capital’s most iconic neighborhoods.
Alfama, the second-oldest neighborhood in Europe. It is a small village in the middle of the capital, a neighborhood in which to lose yourself among alleys and squares, guided by your senses: seeing laundry hanging from balconies and spectacular views of the Tagus, smelling fish grilling on the corner, hearing the sounds of Fado from inside a traditional restaurant, tasting traditional dishes and touching magnificent azulejo tile panels. This is Lisbon’s most picturesque neighborhood and the city’s true soul.
Chiado, an important shopping district in Lisbon, is one of the most cosmopolitan and lively areas of the Portuguese capital. It is particularly rich culturally and considered one of Lisbon’s most prestigious areas.
Martim Moniz is where the city’s greatest number of ethnic communities converge. Known for its square overlooking the castle, it is a kind of Portuguese “Chinatown” and a terminus for the typical Tram 28.
Finally, Mouraria, a lively and welcoming area considered one of the safest neighborhoods in the capital. It is a meeting place for people from different cultures and, at the same time, a place that keeps its old popular traditions alive.
