Village life and tradition: Es Mercadal and the Festival of San Martín
At the foot of Monte Toro lies the charming village of Es Mercadal, considered one of the most beautiful in Menorca. A visit is worthwhile not only for its traditional architecture and local gastronomy, but also for the famous “jaleos” held in July, where horsemen in traditional attire make their steeds dance – accompanied by music, flags and an enthusiastic crowd.
After purchasing a property in Menorca, the area surrounding Monte Toro offers you the perfect blend of nature, history, gastronomy and authentic local spirit.
The legend of Monte Toro: a bull and a virgin
The name "Monte Toro" literally means “Bull Mountain”. According to an ancient legend, a bull lived at the summit in the 13th century and only allowed monks to approach. There, the monks discovered an image of the Virgin Mary. This led, in the 17th century, to the construction of the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Monte Toro, consisting of a monastery and a church with three chapels.
Inside is the statue of Menorca’s patron saint, highlighting the spiritual importance of this site to this day. An alternative interpretation of the name attributes it to the Arabic word “tor” (height), referencing the island’s Moorish past.
Other attractions on Monte Toro
Culturally inclined property owners can also visit an old defensive watchtower on Monte Toro. Near the sanctuary, you’ll also find the imposing statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which watches over the surrounding landscape.
