In the luxury real estate sector, there’s no single path to success. Sometimes, it starts on a plane. Or in a restaurant kitchen. That’s how Mar Ossenkoppele joined Engel & Völkers — after a career path as unconventional as it was enriching.

For the past eight years, she’s been part of the team of real estate advisors in the Sarrià area, where she has found a dynamic, people-driven career full of opportunities.

Freedom, dynamism, and people: what drew her to the industry

After years in aviation and hospitality, Mar was looking for a professional environment where she could organize her daily life more autonomously, work more freely, and connect with people in a more personal way.

“I love not having a monotonous 9-to-5 life. I like being out on the street, discovering new areas, meeting people. It’s so much more fun to work this way.”

For her, one of the biggest attractions of this profession is the variety. Every client, every property, and every operation is different. And that keeps her constantly on the move — no routine, no boredom.

What makes Engel & Völkers special

Mar says that being part of Engel & Völkers makes a big difference in how you work. The brand opens doors and builds trust from the very beginning.

“When you talk to a property owner, they already know the brand. You don’t have to start explaining it from scratch. That makes things a lot easier.”

She also highlights the professional environment: excellent offices, access to a solid database, ongoing training, and a human team that’s always there for you.

Every day, an opportunity to learn

One of the things Mar values most about her job is the constant learning — especially in something she never imagined she’d be so passionate about: architecture and building structures.

“Here you come into contact with many types of properties — old buildings, modern ones, homes with history. You’re always learning something new.”

That exposure to variety has also taught her to quickly read her clients. Thanks to her training, she has learned to classify them according to their personality in order to adapt her approach to each visit.

“There are people who want to know how many amps the house has. And others who just want you to open the door so they can see it in five minutes. In two minutes, you have to know what that person expects from you.”

An unexpected (and very funny) anecdote

Among her many experiences, Mar fondly remembers a visit that seemed perfectly normal until it turned into a scene straight out of a movie.

“We were walking through the garden with a client, and the gardener was being especially friendly with him. Then, as we went inside, we came across two young women who were elbowing each other, clearly excited. And finally, the cleaning lady asked him for an autograph.”

Mar didn’t recognize him, so at the end of the visit, she couldn’t resist saying, quite naturally:

“I’m sorry, I have no idea who you are.”

The client, far from being offended, laughed and admitted that he had already realized — and found her honesty amusing.

The story ended in the best possible way: with the sale closed and a great relationship. Today, Mar is still in touch with that client through social media, where he’s shown her the renovations on his new home.

“That’s what we’re looking for: happy clients.”

Advice for those starting out in real estate

Over the years, Mar has learned a lot. And she’s clear about what she would tell anyone thinking of taking their first steps as a real estate agent:

“At first it’s nerve-wracking. When you do farming, talking to property owners can be intimidating. But you have to remember that you represent a great brand. Confidence comes with knowledge.”

She also insists on the importance of proper preparation: knowing the agreements you’re going to present, mastering the language, and losing the fear of clearly explaining an exclusive or a contract.

And above all, not expecting things to just happen on their own.

“Nothing falls from the sky here. It’s a mix of time, luck, and skill. But if you work well, in a company like this, results come quickly.”

A career with future and purpose

Mar Ossenkoppele’s story is an example of how real estate can be so much more than sales and numbers. It’s a career that combines people, emotions, strategy, and knowledge — a space to grow, reinvent yourself, and enjoy the journey.
