Location: Palmariggi, Apulia
Palmariggi is a small yet charming village in Salento, in the Province of Lecce, located in the middle of the Salento peninsula just a few kilometers from the beautiful Adriatic coast. Despite its modest size, the town contains a rich blend of history, culture, folk traditions, and scenic beauty, making it an ideal destination for those seeking authenticity and tranquility. The historic center of Palmariggi preserves the typical charm of Salento villages, with Lecce stone houses, white alleys, and small inner courtyards. Among the most representative places stand out: The Aragonese Castle (16th century), with its square tower and bastions, once part of the defensive system commissioned by Charles V to protect the area from Turkish raids. The Mother Church of Saint Luke the Evangelist, built in the 17th century, which houses Baroque altars and valuable paintings, typical of Salento sacred art. The Chapel of Our Lady of the Palm, located just outside the town center, linked to one of the community’s most deeply felt devotions. The Feast of Our Lady of the Palm is in fact the town’s most important celebration. It is marked by processions, decorative lights, fireworks, marching bands, and a fair that attracts visitors from across the area. In summer, festivals are held dedicated to local products—olive oil, wine, and typical Salento dishes—highlighting the village’s convivial spirit, along with cultural and musical events tied to Salento pizzica, the traditional dance that enlivens evenings with tambourines and folk songs. Palmariggi is set in a rural landscape dominated by centuries-old olive groves, dry-stone walls, and masserie (farm estates). The area is perfect for hiking or cycling, along paths leading to prehistoric dolmens and menhirs, witnesses to the settlement’s very ancient origins. A few kilometers away are the Adriatic beaches and cliffs, especially those of Otranto, Torre dell’Orso, and Santa Cesarea Terme, easily reachable in less than twenty minutes by car.
