Considered the most romantic in Italy, Lake Orta is a pre-Alpine lake just a few kilometers from Lake Maggiore and only an hour's drive from Milan and Turin. It is already a beloved destination for great chefs who have opened renowned restaurants here and entrepreneurs who have wanted to create resorts and accommodation facilities of rare beauty. In the center stands the Island of San Giulio, a symbol of the area, beautiful and unique in its kind, attracting thousands of visitors every year. Among the most characteristic towns, besides Ameno and Miasino with the enchanting Villa Nigra, Orta stands out undoubtedly, with the Sacro Monte, the historic center full of cobbled alleys, the central square from which boats depart for the Island of San Giulio, and the panoramic walk among sumptuous villas. On the opposite shore, we find Pella: a delightful town also reachable through a walk starting from the Lido of Gozzano. Not far away, the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Sasso, located on a rocky spur overlooking the lake. From here, the view spans an exciting breathtaking panorama, made of slopes and green peaks reflected in the water's mirror. Continuing north, we first find Oira, which is certainly worth a visit, and then Omegna, one of the largest towns, where the Strona stream curiously flows backward. The waters of Lake Orta are clear and suitable for swimming, and many sports are practiced: from swimming to sailing, from canoeing to diving. Surrounded by green mountains, there are many trails for walking in nature, also reaching the summit of Monte Mottarone, above Stresa. It is also not far from Val d'Ossola, a destination for those who love high mountain excursions both in the beautiful season and in winter.
