Sant’Ermete is a historic hamlet of Santarcangelo di Romagna with ancient origins, characterized by finds of Lower–Middle Paleolithic industries. The area, located along the historic road axis, hosted Roman settlements, also evidenced by the former bell tower of Sant’Ermete, which features masonry made with reused materials. The territory of Santarcangelo, including the Sant’Ermete area, was heavily frequented in Roman times thanks to its proximity to the Via Emilia and the presence of watercourses. A noteworthy historical witness is the tower-bell tower, the surviving part of an older complex, located on Via Sant’Ermete (Church Street). The structure has heterogeneous masonry, using brick materials and large stones, including Roman roof tiles, indicating probable reuse. Today the locality appears as a residential and agricultural area within the municipality of Santarcangelo di Romagna, preserving its link with the rural and ancient history of the Valmarecchia Valley.
