Less known than the most famous Amalfi Coast, but equally fascinating, the Cilento area is a true hidden gem of Campania. Located in the southern part of the region, between sea and mountains, in the province of Salerno, this enchanted land offers breathtaking views and unforgettable experiences. Moreover, for its splendid nature, the area of the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park has become a protected natural oasis included by UNESCO in its list of World Heritage Sites. Villa Calamona is about 2 km from the center of Acciaroli and 4 km from the center of Pioppi, both known for the beautiful sea, 35 km from Agropoli, lively town on the outskirts of Cilento, about 80 from Salerno and 6 from Velia. The nearest railway station is in Ascea at about 7 km. Naples is 135 km away. The territory was already known in Roman times as the seat of those natural harbours equipped with the necessary for the storage of ships in transit in the Mediterranean, and subsequently, the beauty of the site led the Romans to build villas. The nearby Pioppi is now known as a crucial place for the research regarding the Mediterranean diet. In the seaside resort there are many scholars involved in preventive medicine research in the field of cardiovascular diseases and food styles, including the Seven Countries Study, directed by Ancel Keys. Some of them has then elected it as a summer residence and retreat after retirement. The Vinciprova Castle has hosted, over the years, numerous international conferences on the Mediterranean diet organized by the scientific community settled in the seaside village, ensuring a national and international reputation given by the considerable influx of foreign tourists even in the off-season.
