Situated between the cities of Alba, Asti and Alessandria, Nizza Monferrato is an important agricultural and commercial hub in the heart of Monferrato, one of Italy’s best-known wine-producing areas in the world, especially for red wines and sparkling wines. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014 for its landscape assets and for Barbera wine, of which it is the undisputed capital. “Nizza is Barbera” is the title of the annual cultural and food-and-wine event held every May, in which the star is Barbera d’Asti DOCG, the local wine that has gained great renown in Italy and abroad. Barbera also gives rise to the prized Nizza DOCG, a wine made from 100% Barbera and aged for a minimum of 18 months. Nizza is a human-scale town, set among wonderful hills and ancient churches, nature trails and delicacies, where even the rows of vines provide a backdrop for open-air sculptures and installations. Its beautiful historic center, medieval in its oldest part, is triangular in shape with straight-lined districts and boasts a substantial number of historic buildings of considerable value. Its extraordinary lands are reflected not only in its wines, but also in the equally rich and varied local cuisine: from fine meats to handmade pasta, to excellent cheeses—tome and robiola—through to delicious traditional desserts. A terroir rich in history and tradition, “secret” for so long, now finally ready to be discovered and to be an excellent investment for the future.
