Location: Laveno, Province of Varese

Laveno is located on the Lombardy shore of Lake Maggiore and is a very important tourist center. Laveno embraces many landscapes: we are in Northern Italy, yet the climate is Mediterranean, and the view ranges from the stretch of water to the mountain peaks. Of particular importance is the tourist harbor which, through the ferry service, connects the town with Intra, on the Piedmont shore, from where it is possible to visit the Borromean Islands and the other beauties of the Lake. Above the town rises Mount Sasso del Ferro, which can be reached by cable car and is one of the most popular panoramic viewpoints on Lake Maggiore, also among hang-gliding and paragliding enthusiasts. For tourism, Laveno Mombello is one of the Lake’s most easily accessible destinations and is well connected to the main Lombardy centers: the Ferrovie Nord, linking it with Varese and then Milan, run to within a few meters of the Lake, very close to the center; the State Railways connect it to Switzerland; the Autostrada dei Laghi can be conveniently reached both via the Besozzo–Vergiate expressway at Sesto Calende and, on the other side of the Lake, toward Gravellona Toce. Today the center offers tourists a remarkable lakeside promenade, with arcaded buildings and pedestrian routes. The town also offers several opportunities for shopping. It was also an important center for the production of ceramics and porcelain. The historic center is home to the beautiful Villa De Angeli Frua, worth visiting also for its renowned botanical park. Not far from Laveno you can also find the Hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso: a jewel set into the cliff face overlooking the waters of Lake Maggiore, where you can admire incredible sunsets.
