Description
In the heart of Canelli stands this spacious historic residence, distinguished by significant architectural features and highly valuable decorative details. Access to the property is through the imposing historic gate and the elegant entrance door, leading into an atmosphere rich in charm, memory and authenticity. The ground floor includes numerous rooms, the ancient infernot wine cellars, a natural spring, the evocative internal garden and the spacious portico. These are highly characterful spaces, ideal for enhancing the home’s original atmosphere and imagining areas devoted to conviviality, wellness or prestigious uses. The presence of a natural spring—rare and exceptionally valuable—represents the ideal heart of an exclusive SPA and wellness project: a natural resource capable of enhancing the ancient infernot and transforming the property into a destination for high-end wellness and hospitality. The historic, spacious stone staircase leads to the main floor, where the residential area is located. Numerous rooms overlook the large rectangular balcony surrounding the internal garden below, creating a distinctive continuity between the interior rooms and the outdoor spaces. The property also includes a generous attic and an additional green area at the rear of the building, at roof level—an uncommon and particularly noteworthy feature in the historic town centre. The residence is made even more exclusive by the historic frescoes found in several rooms, which are protected by the Fine Arts authorities. These decorations testify to the property’s historical and artistic importance, giving it cultural value and a charm that is difficult to replicate. A truly unique property, ideal for those wishing to live in or invest in a prestigious residence rich in history, charm and potential, in the heart of one of the most evocative locations in Monferrato.
Canelli is the second most important town in the province of Asti, together with Nizza Monferrato, a town located in the area recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014, between the Langhe and Monferrato. The town’s history dates back to antiquity; in the Early Middle Ages, its centre was called “Civitas.” Feudal and communal struggles affected the town and control of its strategically important territory, and in 1344 the Statutes of Canelli were drawn up. In the seventeenth century, it was involved in the wars between the Gonzaga of Mantua and the Dukes of Savoy, conflicts that required the local population to continually rebuild the town. Over the centuries, enormous galleries were excavated beneath Canelli’s calcareous tuff soil, reaching depths of up to 32 metres and extending for more than 20 km. They maintain a constant temperature ideal for the precious wine produced here. These galleries house the historic wineries known as the Underground Cathedrals, protected by UNESCO as part of the Vineyard Landscapes of Piedmont site. In Canelli, in 1865, Carlo Gancia produced the first Italian sparkling wine using the traditional method, which was exported worldwide.
