The territory of Toirano is located in the valley of the same name, on the right of the Varatella stream and at its confluence with the Barescione. It is dominated by Mount San Pietro dei Monti (891 m), laterally carved by the valley of the Vero stream, where almost eighty large and smaller cavities open up, including the famous Basura caves (bàsura in the local dialect "witch") and the Colombo caves, natural caves with ancient traces of prehistoric man. The valley probably hosted a settlement as early as Roman times, and later became part of the Byzantine empire's limes (border) for defense against the Lombards. The oldest area of the Toirano Borough is called "Turaccu" (Italianized to "Toracco"), which in medieval Latin means "foot of the tower." The characteristic medieval village is still preserved today, with the bases of some towers and the bridge known as "Giaire" with three semicircular arches with squared stone pillars on the Varatella stream, dating back to the 13th century, topped by a votive shrine dating back to the early 19th century, as well as some stretches of the ancient city walls. Toirano also hosts the splendid ethnographic museum and offers the opportunity for a relaxing immersion in the greenery of trails that lead to a breathtaking view just a few kilometers from the Ligurian Sea.
