The medieval village: a nest of stone shaped by the hands of outstanding craftsmen With the Middle Ages, Bomarzo takes on the compact, close-knit form that still characterizes it today. Houses pressed together, arches, narrow alleys, and an urban layout that follows the morphology of the rock. Its commanding position over the Tiber Valley made it a strategic point, and the village grew as a small fortified center, tied to the land and to agricultural activities thanks to its rich cultivation. With the Orsini in the 16th century come power and unease: The most complex moment in Bomarzo’s history arrives in the 16th century, when the fief is in the hands of the Orsini, one of the most influential families in Lazio. It was then that Palazzo Orsini, which dominates the town, became the political and cultural heart of the village. But it is the figure of Pier Francesco “Vicino” Orsini who leaves an indelible mark on the memory of the place. He was the one who commissioned the Sacro Bosco: an unconventional garden, mysterious in its paths, refined in the works that define it, and unique. Today known as the Park of the Monsters, it is a Mannerist garden populated by gigantic sculptures, mythological animals, enigmatic figures, and impossible architectures. It is a work that defies the rules of classical beauty and reflects a tormented inner world, made of allegories, mourning, and symbols. The park represents the pinnacle of the artistic use of peperino stone, transformed into a theater of visions that has no equal in Europe.
