Location: Bairo, Piedmont
Bairo is a charming village in the Canavese area, in the Province of Turin, set in a landscape of extraordinary tranquility and authenticity. With a predominantly agricultural vocation, the village has been able to preserve over time a strong rural identity, still evident today in its traditional architecture. The village offers all essential services. Only 15 minutes from the motorway, important cities such as Ivrea, Turin and Milan are easily reached. The surrounding area is characterized by gentle hills alternating with fertile plains, cultivated fields and vineyards, always framed by the striking presence of the mountains in the background. In the immediate vicinity are Lake Candia and the renowned Lake Viverone, one of the area’s most popular tourist destinations. For nature and mountain lovers, the Gran Paradiso National Park lies a short distance away, while the Aosta Valley can be reached in about an hour by car. The locality also stands out for the richness of its historical and cultural heritage, with castles and medieval villages. Among them, the nearby village of Agliè is noteworthy, famous for its imposing Castle, a location for major television productions. The Bairo Mill traces its origins to the second half of the 16th century, when the Caluso Canal was built in Canavese, designed to irrigate the fields and support local agriculture. It was along this watercourse that, in 1561, the Community of Bairo obtained the right to build the Mill, which made it possible to harness the power of water for productive activities, such as grinding cereals, operating sawmills, powering machinery for weaving and forging, and generating electricity. Between the 19th and 20th centuries, the area’s production needs changed and part of the building was converted into a sawmill, still powered by water. For centuries, the Bairo mill was one of the central points of the village’s economic life. In 1937 the Mill was purchased by the family of the current owner and remains one of the village’s most distinctive historical landmarks.
