Location: Fontanile, Piedmont
Fontanile is a charming village in Upper Monferrato, dominated by the magnificent dome that makes it visible even from afar. The pride of the village, the dome defines the beautiful Church of Saint John the Baptist, built in the late 19th century to a design by architect Gualandi and commissioned by the parish priest, Monsignor Soave. The name “Fontanile” points to the area’s main feature: the many spring waters that once fed the Rio Cervino and formed a lake. The settlement originated around the 4th–5th century AD, when barbarian invasions forced the valley-floor populations to move to higher, more defensible places. In the village center, along the main road, the remains of the circular bastions of the ancient Castle are still visible, attesting to the important role played by the Marquisate of Fontanile in the Acqui area. A truly distinctive note that has made Fontanile known as the village where “The walls tell”: its history is recounted, through evocative murals, along the fortress wall and on the facades of houses—true canvases on which the past is depicted, from the Middle Ages to the present day. Set among vineyards and the gentle Monferrato hills, Fontanile is surrounded by some of the most beautiful towns and villages in Upper Monferrato: Nizza Monferrato, Alice Bel Colle, Castel Boglione, Castel Rocchero, Castelletto Molina, Mombaruzzo, Quaranti. Its strategic location makes it possible to reach major centers quickly: the spa town of Acqui Terme is only 20 minutes away, Alba is 45 minutes away, and Asti is 30 km away. Turin and Milan are 90 km and 120 km away, respectively. The famous Serravalle Scrivia outlet (the largest in Europe) is just a 40-minute drive away, the sea 1 hour away, and the mountains 1.5 hours away.
