A charming gem just steps from the sea

Capri is the most famous island in the Gulf of Naples, close to the Amalfi Coast, from which it is only 30 minutes away. Coveted by great emperors such as Augustus and Tiberius, thanks to its mild climate and fascinating landscape, it covers just over 10 sq km. Mediterranean temperatures support the production of olive oil and the renowned limoncello, as well as extraordinary botanical essences that make the island a place of fragrance and beauty in every season. A tourist destination since forever, Capri is rich in architectural traces left by those who chose it as a permanent residence. From the Roman Villa Jovis, through the late-medieval Charterhouse, to the noble residences of the last two hundred years: Villa Lysis and the villas of writers, such as Munthe’s panoramic home and Malaparte’s brilliant one. The road built by Krupp is the best known among the sea-view routes that wind across the island. In Anacapri it is easy to devote time to walks: nature is unspoiled, and silence and privacy matter greatly to those who live here. The village preserves the ways of the island at its most authentic, with local crafts and quiet lanes. From here one descends to the Blue Grotto, a natural wonder that amazes visitors with its colors and magic. Other routes lead to the Fortini trail and the Monte Solaro chairlift. The beaches are beautiful, free or equipped, at Marina Grande as well as Marina Piccola. Where lunch at La Fontelina turns into a swim by the Faraglioni, and a trip to the Punta Carena lighthouse lets you admire daring dives and the most beautiful sunset. La dolce vita, instead, has in Capri its chosen home, where high society gathers to “hold court” at any hour. Since the 1950s, the Piazzetta has seen the glamour of a crowd that, from Sofia Loren onward, has never stopped having fun here.
