Location: Costigliole d'Asti, Piedmont
On the border between the Langhe and the Monferrato lies the town of Costigliole d’Asti, a municipality of about 6,000 inhabitants, rich in history and culture, where it is truly pleasant to stop and enjoy the authentic flavors of our tradition while taking in breathtaking views. This charming village is a perfect meeting point between the gentle hills of the Monferrato, covered with valuable vineyards, and the landscapes of the Asti area, framed by the magnificent peaks of the Alps, where hazelnut groves, vineyards, woods, vegetable gardens, fields and many small, truly fascinating hamlets alternate. The Castle of Costigliole d’Asti is the best-known and most important monument in this area. It has been documented since 1061, when it came under the control of Bonifacio del Vasto. Later, it was at the center of many disputes between Guelphs and Ghibellines, until it was occupied by the Asinari family, who made several changes to the structures. Around the mid-19th century, it became the residence of Virginia Oldoini, known as the Countess of Castiglione and wife of Francesco Verasis, who is considered one of the first Italian secret agents. The countess was in fact a cousin of Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour, and played an important role during the Risorgimento and the international events of that time. But Costigliole is not only famous for its evocative Castle. In addition to visiting its historical heritage and tasting its excellent wines, such as Barbera d’Asti, Moscato and Grignolino, a walk through its historic center certainly offers unforgettable emotions with its historic buildings, ancient churches and very picturesque squares. You can also take part in many major festivals and events, such as “Rosso Barbera,” held in late October/early November at the Castle, the Raviolo al Plin Festival in mid-August, the Asti Festival of Sagra Festivals in September, and the Palio dei Borghi, a traditional 7-a-side football tournament held during the summer. In the surrounding area, there are numerous trails winding through the vineyards, to be explored on foot, by bicycle or on horseback, leading to unique and breathtaking panoramas. Finally, no visit can end without savoring the best of Piedmontese cuisine: tajarin with truffle, agnolotti del plin, red-wine braised beef, hazelnut cake and bùnet, naturally accompanied by a good glass of local wine.
