Castello di Annone originated as a Roman settlement located on the Via Fulvia, which connected Asti to Tortona. The name derives from the Latin ad nonum (at nine), because it was 9 Roman miles from Asti. In the Middle Ages, it became a significant strategic transit point, transforming the village into a thriving center for merchants and financiers, maintaining its importance until 1644, when the castle was destroyed by Spanish attacks. The village, given its strategic position next to the Tanaro River, played a crucial role as a trade crossroads until the mid-1600s. Extending towards the Alessandria plain in modern times, it also gained industrial significance, as various production facilities were established over time towards Alessandria, contributing to the area's development. Agriculture and vine cultivation remain very important to the area's economy. Given its strategic location a few kilometers from Asti and the Langhe, wine and food tourism also represents a resource for the village. Quality food and wine are important resources that these areas know how to enhance with initiatives linked to oenology, genuine food, and the beauty of nature. The territory of Castello di Annone borders the important Rocchetta Tanaro Nature Reserve, offering nature enthusiasts relaxing walks, cycling, and horseback excursions.
