Porta Maggiore is one of Rome’s most evocative historic and architectural hubs, located on the border between the Esquilino district and the San Giovanni area. This imposing structure was created in 52 AD under Emperor Claudius not as a gate, but as a monumental double travertine arch designed to allow the Aqua Claudia and Anio Novus aqueducts to cross over the ancient Via Prenestina and Via Labicana (today’s Via Casilina).
