Panarea is one of the seven islands of the Aeolian archipelago and, with a surface area of just 3.5 square kilometres, it is the smallest of the Aeolian Islands. It is located northeast of Salina and Lipari and lies approximately 30 nautical miles from Stromboli. The tourist harbour of Milazzo is about 65 nautical miles away. Panarea belongs to the municipality of Lipari, in the province of Messina. The island is divided into three hamlets: San Pietro, Drautto and Iditella.
The island’s centre, with its boutiques, bars and restaurants, is located in San Pietro, where the main pier is also situated. Just beyond the village of Drautto lies Cala degli Zimmari, one of Panarea’s most renowned beaches. From here, a scenic path leads to Punta Milazzese, home to the remains of a prehistoric village. Another ancient footpath leads to Cala Junco, widely regarded as the most beautiful cove in the archipelago: a natural amphitheatre of rock formations embracing a striking natural seawater pool.
Off the coast of Panarea lie the islets of Basiluzzo, Spinazzola, Lisca Bianca, Dattilo, Bottaro, Lisca Nera, the Panarelli and the Formiche, which, together with the active volcano of Stromboli, create an atmosphere of extraordinary beauty. The island is equipped with a helicopter landing pad and can be reached by ferry, speedboat or private yacht.
