Lake Maggiore is the second largest in Italy by surface area. Its shores are shared between Switzerland (Canton Ticino) and Italy (provinces of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, Novara, Varese). Lake Maggiore is located 80% in Italian territory and the remaining 20% in Swiss territory. The highest altitude of its catchment area is Punta Dufour in the Monte Rosa massif. The maximum depth is about 370m (in the cryptodepression between Ghiffa and Porto Valtravaglia). The flowery area is the eastern part of the lake (between Maccagno and Angera), while on the western shore we find the renowned localities of Arona, Stresa, and Verbania. Between the latter two lies the archipelago of the Borromean Islands: Isola Madre, Isola Bella, and Isola Superiore dei Pescatori. Opposite the Swiss locality of Brissago are the two Brissago Islands. In front of the coast of Cannero Riviera are the three emerged rocks known as the Castles of Cannero. Located in the municipality of Leggiuno, on the Lombard shore, is the Hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso, a monastery built on the rocky coast, accessible via the staircase that ascends from the lake or descends from the parking area above. The monastic complex consists of three buildings and dates back to the 14th century, with more recent additions from the 19th century. More recently, it has undergone restoration, completed in 1986. Owned by the province of Varese, it is entrusted for custody to a community of Dominicans. Located on the sacred mount of San Carlo in Arona, the colossus (commonly called Sancarlone) stands as one of the largest statues in the world, measuring more than 35 meters in height. The statue depicts Cardinal Saint Charles Borromeo.
