Location: Roccastrada, Tuscany
The picturesque Roccastrada area is characterized by a mild climate and a traditional agricultural landscape. It stands on a base of igneous rock and enjoys an enviable position: on one side a beautiful, wide view over the surrounding plain as far as the Island of Elba, on the other rises Mount Amiata. It stretches from the Grosseto plain to the Tyrrhenian Sea and further to the low mountains, to land cultivated with vineyards and to the hills where ancient medieval villages stand, all within 28,000 hectares. The town, fortified on a rock, is located at 475 m above sea level within the Park of the Grosseto Metalliferous Hills, in Northern Maremma. In the Middle Ages Roccastrada was an important mining center for silver and copper and developed as a fief of the Aldobrandeschi until the early 1300s. The village later came under Sienese rule and then under the protection of the Medici family in 1555. The Municipality of Roccastrada, with its many well-known hamlets such as Montemassi, Roccatederighi, etc., offers a rich historical heritage, castles, urban trekking, guided excursions and an authentic Tuscan atmosphere. Main distances: ◆ Castiglione della Pescaia: 40 km ◆ Follonica: 33 km ◆ Grosseto: 31 km ◆ Pisa Airport: 137 km ◆ Siena: 62 km ◆ Rome Fiumicino Airport: 214 km
