Location: Malnate, Lombardy
Malnate is a small Lombard town with about 17,000 inhabitants. The municipality is in the Province of Varese and, in addition to the main center, also includes five hamlets: Folla, Rovera, Baraggia, and the better-known Gurone and San Salvatore. The town lies near the Olona River, in the Lanza Valley, between Monte Morone and Monte Casnione, and it is precisely thanks to this fortunate location that Malnate has developed over time a thriving economy based on agriculture, the textile industry, mechanical engineering and abrasives—productive activity in which, for many years, Malnate represented, with the “Mole Ermoli”, which initially exploited the Sandstone Quarries to produce grinding wheels made of molera, later developing into the production of abrasives using synthetic materials, the largest national production area. Also famous for being the birthplace of Luigi Lucioni, a celebrated realist portrait and landscape painter, Malnate also boasts a beautiful and well-kept local green area, the PLIS, Parco Valle del Lanza, a Protected Area of Supramunicipal Interest, established in 2002. In the Park, there are industrial historical finds of inestimable value together with the natural system of the molera quarries of Malnate and Cagno, used for the production of sandstone grinding wheels. The city administration cares about the well-being of Malnate’s residents and, for this reason, a wide-ranging plan has been promoted to make the town even more livable: the main objectives are improving public areas, road circulation, and safety. For the youngest, drawing on the international project “The City of Children”, activities and meeting places have been developed that truly make Malnate a paradise for its youngest citizens. In addition, within the municipality there are school facilities covering every level of education, a public library, and the Civic Museum of Natural Sciences “Mario Realini”.
