Viggiù is a municipality in the north-eastern part of the Province of Varese, more precisely in Valceresio, at the foot of Monte Orsa, with about 5,300 inhabitants. Its history begins in very distant times: finds from the Roman era bear witness to this. Viggiù has many treasures. Among them, the historic center is worth mentioning, unique of its kind, characterized by typical courtyard houses, with entrances adorned with artistic stone portals, where the stonemasons’ workshops were located. The famous “Viggiù Stone” was one of the many stones quarried from the nearby hills; it was used as a building and decorative material and in the past this made the area a place of great artistic importance. This feature made Viggiù known as the village of the “Picasass”, because in the past, walking through the streets, one could hear only the ringing of hammers striking stone. There are also many churches enriched by the works of local artists. In the heart of the village, in a pleasant green setting, stands Villa Borromeo, an elegant late Neoclassical building, an ideal destination for day trips.v
