Location: Spigno Monferrato, Piedmont
The territory of Spigno Monferrato is the southernmost in the Province of Alessandria, on the border with the Province of Savona and very close to the seaside resorts of the Ligurian coast. Its origins as a marquisate date back to before the year 1000. It was part of the Aleramic March, and the descendants of Aleramo founded within its territory the Abbey of San Quintino in 1994. Located in a strategically important position, it dominated the Bormida Valley from above. In ancient times Roman legions likely passed through its territory to reach Gallia Narbonensis, and over the centuries it remained of fundamental importance in controlling the routes of communication with Liguria and France. Evidence of this past is the medieval bridge over the Bormida River. In the most important hamlets of the municipality (Squaneto, Turpino and Rocchetta) we find many traces of its medieval past, with imposing fortifications, 16th-century churches and noble palaces. The hamlet of "Montaldo di Spigno" features a fine series of sacred buildings in a rustic Baroque style and an enviable view over the woods and the badlands between Monferrato and the Apennines.
