Perched on a hill overlooking the Marta River valley and gazing at the Tyrrhenian Sea from afar, Tarquinia is a city that seems suspended between the sky and the past. Located in the heart of the Lazio Maremma, about 90 km from Rome and 45 km from Civitavecchia, its position is strategic: a transit point between Lazio and Tuscany, between the hilly hinterland and the Tyrrhenian coast. The surrounding territory is gentle and varied: cultivated hills, woods, waterways, and a coastline that extends to the seaside hamlet of Tarquinia Lido. But what makes Tarquinia truly unique is not only its geographical position: it is its millennial history, rooted in the Etruscan era and intertwined with the events of Rome, the Middle Ages, and the Renaissance. Known to the ancients as Tarchna, Tarquinia was one of the most powerful and influential cities of the Etruscan Dodecapolis, the league of the twelve city-states. Probably founded between the 10th and 8th centuries BC, it was a flourishing center of culture, commerce, and spirituality. Its monumental necropolises, particularly that of Monterozzi, hold hundreds of frescoed tombs, true masterpieces of Etruscan funerary art, now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
