Description

Nestled among Alpine pastures at an altitude of 2,250 metres, at the foot of the majestic vertical walls of the Dolomites, stands a splendid historic mountain hut dating back to the second half of the 18th century. Originally designed as a summer alpine pasture shelter and hayloft, this building has survived centuries of harsh winters, preserving the authentic character of mountain architecture.

The lower floor is built of local dry-stone masonry: a typical, partially underground stone base that originally served as a stable and retained this function until the 1960s.

The upper floor is constructed entirely from imposing old larch logs, joined at the corners using the traditional Blockbau technique. Exposed to sunlight and the elements for almost three centuries, the wood has acquired an extraordinary sun-weathered patina, with shades ranging from dark brown to silvery grey.

The windows are small and quadrangular, designed to prevent heat loss. The recently replaced frames surround breathtaking views, while the main façade features a small, finely crafted wooden balcony where hay was once hung to dry.

Upon crossing the threshold, the atmosphere changes instantly. The air is permeated by the unmistakable scent of resin, Swiss pine and wood smoke.

The heart of the hut is the Stua, with its wood-burning kitchen stove. This former living room also contains two alcove beds and is entirely panelled in Swiss pine, whose warm honey-orange tones release a soothing aroma that promotes well-being.

The floor is completed by another room entirely dedicated to sleeping accommodation, with four bunk beds in a traditional wooden structure and an additional wood-burning stove.

Location: Canazei, Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol

At an altitude of 2,250 metres, on the Ciampac plateau in Canazei, surrounded by its magnificent grounds of almost 200,000 m² and beside a crystal-clear spring, the mountain hut blends perfectly into the surrounding landscape, almost as though it were a natural extension of the mountain, offering breathtaking views of Sasso Piatto and the Sella Group.

Away from the busiest trails, with only two other mountain huts nearby—yet suitably distanced—and easily reachable on foot in less than half an hour from the nearest lifts, it is the ideal place to relax and withdraw from the rest of the world in an oasis of absolute peace and unspoilt nature.
