Samarate is an Italian municipality with approximately 16,000-16,200 inhabitants, known as Samaratesi. It is located in the northwestern Varese plain, a few kilometers from Gallarate, Busto Arsizio, and the Milan-Malpensa Airport area. Samarate was officially granted the title of "city" in 2009 by presidential decree. The territory is predominantly flat, typical of the Po Valley, with green areas, agricultural spaces, and urbanized zones. The climate is characterized by cold, humid winters and hot summers, with rainfall mainly in spring and autumn. The city also includes some smaller districts and localities, such as Cascina Costa, Cascina Elisa, San Macario, and Verghera, which contribute to its urban structure. Samarate has a tradition of industrial and mechanical activities, especially related to the aeronautical production. The district of Cascina Costa is historically associated with the headquarters of important aeronautical companies, such as the former AgustaWestland (now part of Leonardo), among the leading helicopter manufacturers globally. The city features historical churches (like the Parish Church of the Holy Trinity and other religious landmarks in the districts) and some historic villas of architectural value. The Agusta Museum tells the story of local aviation and the helicopter industry. Samarate is a medium-small city with an ancient history, an economy that has benefited from the industrial development of the Varese area, and a quality of life typical of the Lombardy plains centers: peaceful yet well-connected to surrounding urban areas such as Gallarate and Milan.
