Besozzo is a municipality of about 9,000 inhabitants, known since Roman times, with buildings that have been inhabited since the Middle Ages. Besozzo offers all the services needed to live in a unique atmosphere, as well as a railway station with a line connected both to Malpensa Airport and to Luino, and therefore to Switzerland. A short distance away is the town of Laveno, a very important tourist center. Laveno encompasses many landscapes: we are in northern Italy, yet the climate is Mediterranean and the view ranges from the water to the mountain peaks. Particularly important is the tourist harbor which, through the ferry service, links the town with Intra, on the Piedmont shore, and from which it is possible to visit the Borromean Islands and other beauties of the lake. Above the town rises Sasso del Ferro, one of the most appreciated panoramic viewpoints on Lake Maggiore, also by hang-gliding and paragliding enthusiasts. From a tourism standpoint, Laveno Mombello is one of the most easily reached destinations on the lake and is well connected to the main Lombard centers: Ferrovie Nord, which connects it with Varese and then with Milan, arrives just a few meters from the lake, very close to the center; the State Railways connect it to Switzerland; the Autostrada dei Laghi is easily reached either via the Besozzo–Vergiate expressway at Sesto Calende, or via the lake, toward Gravellona Toce. Today the center offers tourists a remarkable lakeside promenade with arcaded buildings and pedestrian routes. The town also offers various shopping opportunities. It was also an important center for the production of ceramics and porcelain. The historic center is home to the beautiful Villa De Angeli Frua, well worth a visit also for its renowned botanical park. Not far from Laveno is the Hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso: a jewel set into the cliff face overlooking the waters of Lake Maggiore.
