At the border between Langhe and Monferrato lies the town of Costigliole d’Asti, a municipality of about 6,000 inhabitants, rich in history and culture, where it is truly delightful to stop and enjoy the authentic flavors of our tradition and immerse oneself in truly breathtaking landscapes. This enchanting village is a perfect meeting point between the gentle hills of Monferrato, covered with precious vineyards, and the landscapes of Astesana, framed by the marvelous peaks of the Alps, and where hazelnut groves, vineyards, woods, gardens, fields, and many very charming small villages alternate. The Castle of Costigliole d’Asti is the most well-known and important monument of this area. It has been known since 1061 when it came under the control of Bonifacio del Vasto. Subsequently, it was at the center of many disputes between Guelphs and Ghibellines until it was occupied by the Asinari family, who made several modifications to the structures. Around the mid-19th century, it became the residence of Virginia Oldoini, known as the Countess of Castiglione and wife of Francesco Verasis, who is considered one of the first Italian secret agents. The countess was, in fact, a cousin of Camillo Benso Count of Cavour and played an important role during the Risorgimento and the international events of that era. But Costigliole is not only famous for its picturesque Castle. In addition to visiting its historical heritage and tasting its excellent wines, such as Barbera d’Asti, Moscato, and Grignolino, a walk through its historic center certainly offers unforgettable emotions with its historical buildings, ancient churches, and truly evocative squares. One can also participate in many important festivals and events, such as the Raviolo al Plin Festival in mid-August, the Festival of Astigiane Festivals in September, and the Palio dei Borghi, a traditional seven-a-side football tournament held in the summer. In the surroundings, there are numerous trails that wind through the vineyards to be explored on foot, by bicycle, or on horseback, leading to discover unique and breathtaking views. Finally, a visit cannot end without savoring the best of Piedmontese cuisine, namely tajarin with truffle, agnolotti del plin, braised beef in red wine, hazelnut cake, and bùnet, naturally accompanied by a good glass of local wine.
