Costa Smeralda: an ever-current fairy tale
Once upon a time, there was a prince sailing on his yacht off the northeastern coast of Sardinia. As he approached the coasts of Gallura, with its coves, pink rocks, and emerald sea, the prince fell in love with that enchanting land that he wanted to make his own. Here ends the popular fairy tale that narrates the birth of the world's most celebrated tourist business, and the chronicle begins. When His Highness Karim Aga Khan, prince of the Ismailis, decided to land in Olbia, he certainly didn't think of Costa Smeralda as it is now. His intention was to build a series of villas where he could spend holidays with friends. So the prince decided to transform the initiative into a real investment. It was the year 1962.
With the "Costa Smeralda" logo, an exclusive world is evoked, made of quality tourism, of "happy few" who have been sharing for years an earthly dream that is codified in the right to happiness. The nature of Costa Smeralda is protected in the landscape and environment by the Building Regulations of the Consortium, which imposes respect for it in flora, color, and materials. The Costa Smeralda Consortium is a small piece of land compared to Sardinia, but it has become the very evocation of an island, synonymous with quality tourism. Costa Smeralda is one of the most welcoming temples for tourism and escape, typical of summer.

The Costa Smeralda
Costa Smeralda, one of the most sought-after and well-known tourist destinations in the world, is located on the northeastern coastal stretch of Sardinia, extending for a total of 88 km. The heart of Costa Smeralda is the village of Porto Cervo, famous for its elegant boutiques, renowned restaurants and venues, the famous personalities who frequent it, and the Marina, home to the most beautiful and largest boats in the world. Around the village of Porto Cervo, the remaining areas of Costa Smeralda develop: Romazzino, Cala di Volpe, Piccolo Pevero, Pevero Golf, Pantogia, and Liscia di Vacca. Even though outside the "Costa Smeralda Consortium," the areas of Abbiadori, Poltu Quatu, Baia Sardinia, Cannigione, and Porto Rotondo are also considered, in an informal way, part of Costa Smeralda.
Porto Cervo
Undisputed capital of Costa Smeralda, Porto Cervo is a well-known holiday location, built around a natural inlet, whose shape resembles a deer and dominates the promotories facing towards the sea. In summer, it becomes an extraordinary and sparkling parade of yachts and famous personalities. The center consists of its very famous piazzetta around which shops, prestigious brand boutiques, the most authoritative restaurants, luxury hotels, fashionable nightclubs, and villas climbing up to the surrounding hills, immersed in the Mediterranean scrub, face. The life of the village revolves around the promenade, the Piazzetta delle Chiacchiere, and the Sottopiazza, a maze of alleys, windows, and small balconies – built in what has become the style of Costa Smeralda. The Old Port gave rise to the creation of Costa Smeralda, with the idea of creating a paradise for elite international tourism. Instead, the New Marina was designed in the eighties, with the aim of creating a more spacious and equipped port, making it today one of the best equipped in the Mediterranean. With a maximum capacity of 700 berths, home to the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda – a prestigious club organizing international sailing regattas –, you can admire yachts, sailing ships, and the most beautiful boats in the world simply by walking along its docks.
Cala di Volpe
Small inlet, a natural harbor, famous for the luxury hotel of the same name designed by architect Couelle, which during the summer season becomes the "homeland" of mega-yachts moored in front. Nature is the protagonist of this area: a protected gulf, green and flowery, rich in Mediterranean scents and seductive charm. Cala di Volpe is synonymous with architectural and artistic prestige: names of international high society have been and still are guests among the hedges and hidden villas.
Baia Sardinia
Famous seaside tourist resort located at the northern tip of Costa Smeralda. Its architecture takes inspiration from that of nearby Porto Cervo, but of smaller dimensions. Some of the most renowned nightclubs are located in this area, along with the famous water park.
Cannigione
A destination for beach tourism, thanks to its proximity to Costa Smeralda, Cannigione was born in the early 1900s as a fishing village. Its seafront is occupied by the docks of a modern and spacious port. Next to it is the light-colored, coarse-grained sand beach that plunges into a sea of infinite shades of blue. The seabed slopes gently, much appreciated by diving and snorkeling practitioners, so much so that it has become one of the diving centers par excellence in Sardinia. La Conia beach is located in this area: a beach of white and fine sand, dominated by an equipped pine forest and a well-maintained green lawn.
Poltu Quatu
From Gallurese dialect meaning "hidden place," Poltu Quatu rises in a characteristic inlet hidden by very thick vegetation that runs along this natural fjord. Home to a pretty tourist port, during the summer it becomes an active center, especially during the evening thanks to the nightclub circuit in the surroundings.
Romazzino
Romazzino is one of the most famous areas of Costa Smeralda, where the most prestigious and refined villas rise, as well as one of the most elegant hotels of the Coast, with a fine sand beach and the crystalline green-blue sea as a natural frame. The color and clarity of this sea are due to the particular seabed of sand and granite.
La Celvia
Exclusive location with vibrant colors such as the blue of the sea, the pinkish granite rocks, and the green of the Mediterranean scrub that immerses the splendid villas of this area. Besides being one of the beaches most loved by VIPs, it is the ideal place for those who love scuba diving.
Pevero Golf
From the project of Architect Robert Tret Jones, in 1967, rises the Pevero Golf Club Costa Smeralda: 18 holes and 72 par inserted among the vegetation, it is considered one of the best golf courses in the world. Around the club house and the golf course, wonderful villas with breathtaking views of the bay of Cala di Volpe develop.
Piccolo and Grande Pevero
Rich in tourist settlements typical of Costa Smeralda, the beach of Piccolo Pevero is characterized by parts of shallow, sloping seabed, which makes children's play easy. A sought-after destination by VIPs and paparazzi, it is a bay immersed in nature: from the gardens of dream villas, from the Mediterranean scrub, and from a Golf green that descends to the sea. In a picturesque crescent bay lies one of the most glamorous and exclusive beaches in the world: Grande Pevero is an arched expanse of very white and soft sand, almost impalpable, lapped by changing colors of the sea, whose shades vary, in a chromatic game, from green to blue and then become, thanks to its extraordinary clarity, transparent at the shoreline.
Pantogia
Along the slopes of the hill located behind Porto Cervo, Pantogia, an oasis of tranquility not far from the beaches, enjoys a wide panorama that ranges from the Marina of Porto Cervo to the island of Tavolara.
Liscia di Vacca
Born in historical times around the small church dedicated to the Madonna of Bonaria, Liscia di Vacca is a small village that has always been inhabited, known as one of the most historical locations of Costa Smeralda. Thanks to the work of Arch. Savin Couelle, the new village was born: elegant but respecting the typical Gallurese style, beautiful villas immersed in vegetation develop in the surroundings.
Cala Granu
Wonderful bay nestled between wild nature and rocks sculpted by time and wind. The beach has white and very fine sand and is characterized by a wide shallow sandy seabed in front. It is sheltered from the winds and is easily accessible, ideal for families and for those who love tranquility.
Cala del Faro
Exclusive location a short distance from the center and the Marina of Porto Cervo, a bay surrounded by nature, the green of the gardens that descend to the two beaches, framed by an emerald-colored sea.
Portisco
Renowned for its exclusive Marina that hosts majestic yachts from all over the world every summer, residences and luxury villas dot the territory surrounding the beach. The beach offers a landscape of great beauty, with very suggestive chromatic plays, white and fine sand, surrounded by pink granite rocks.
Porto Rotondo
Exclusive venues, social life, fairy-tale beaches: a dream location, one of the most important realities of national and international tourism, diamond point, along with Porto Cervo, of Gallura. Born in 1964, from an initiative of the Venetians Luigi and Nicolò Donà delle Rose, Porto Rotondo extends between the gulf of Cugnana and that of Marinella. The heart of the locality is the well-equipped port that can contain up to a maximum of 800 berths. Over the years, it has seen the construction of timeshares, residences, and villas in the area, which have led Porto Rotondo to be, during the summer period, one of the most important realities of Sardinian, Italian, and international tourism. The architecture of Porto Rotondo recalls the structure of Venice, not by chance the main square has been named Piazzetta San Marco. Among the most known beaches are Spiaggia Ira (in honor of Ira von Füstenberg), Spiaggia dei Sassi, and Punta Volpe.
Olbia
Olbia is the gateway to the North-East of Sardinia: an ancient and flourishing city will welcome you, a sought-after holiday destination overlooking a gulf with endless attractions. The city overlooks a spectacular gulf, which protects the Marine Protected Area of Tavolara and gives access to the exclusive Costa Smeralda. To the sea and archaeology, you can add the delights of the palate, don't miss the taste of Olbia mussels, washed down with Vermentino.
Porto Istana
The bay of Porto Istana rises at the foot of Capo Ceraso, a granite promontory in the hamlet of Murta Maria within the gulf of Olbia, from which it is about 20 minutes by car. The bay is a set of 4 beaches separated by small rocky strips. All four beaches are characterized by a very fine white sand bottom, which slopes gently towards the emerald colors of the sea, therefore particularly suitable for children. Around there are hotels, tourist villages, restaurants, and bars.
Porto Taverna
Famous for the beautiful view of Tavolara Island, a breathtaking panorama that is the backdrop to one of the most beautiful beaches on the east coast of Sardinia. The beach of Porto Taverna is located in the municipality of the renowned tourist resort of Porto San Paolo and is 10 minutes from San Teodoro and 15 minutes from Olbia. It is 1 km long and is characterized by white and fine sand, shallow and sloping seabed, clear and crystalline water.
Pittulongu
In the immense and fascinating coast of Olbia, in the north-eastern part of Sardinia, squeezed between Costa Smeralda and the Marine Protected Area of Tavolara, there is the beautiful beach symbol of the city. It is the favorite beach of the people of Olbia, about 8 km from the inhabited center, on the road that leads to Golfo Aranci. It is a splendid and extensive crescent of very fine and white sand alternating with stretches of small shells. The playa is the first and most frequented beach of the Lido di Pittulongu. Next to it is the beach of Squalo, separated by a small rocky tongue. Beyond you will find the Pelican, but much smaller with small emerging rocks. Further ahead, still on foot, you will reach Mare e Rocce, with a bottom of light and thin sand. More to the north, at the border is Bados, a very vast shore with soft sand in gray-ocher tones.
Golfo Aranci
Golfo Aranci is a small municipality a few kilometers north of Olbia that has been able to adapt over the years to the needs of tourism, becoming one of the most loved destinations on the North Eastern coast. Former fishing village, the center still retains the charm of ancient times with its small colored houses. The village extends on a tongue of land in the middle of the sea, overlooking the gulf of Olbia, which ends at the base of Capo Figari. Excursions by sea and paths by land lead to spectacular inlets with paradises of sand that alternate with cliffs overlooking turquoise and crystalline waters. Over twenty beaches, some wild, others comfortable and equipped like the Five Beaches of Golfo Aranci, small paradises of white and thin sand facing the village, one after the other. Towards Olbia you will find the White Beach, thin sand alternating with rocks, the beautiful beach of Cala Sassari, the enchanting expanse of Nodu Pianu, separated by a small path from the wild beauty of Cala Banana, the corner of paradise of Baia Caddinas, the coves of very fine sand of Terrata, the small beaches of Baia de Bahas and the beach of Baracconi (shepherd and fishermen's huts). Around Capo Figari, here is the beach of Cala Moresca, the protected reserve of Cala Greca, a pink pebble beach hidden by cliff, the delicious Cala del Sonno, where fishermen take refuge, and Cala Sabina, a shore with Caribbean appearances, reachable with the railway that runs through the promontory.
Puntaldia and Lu Impostu
Puntaldia is a residential complex perfectly integrated with the environment, with a tourist port, the small square, and all services. The cove of Puntaldia opens in front of the imposing profile of Tavolara with a seabed of fine sand with brilliant reflections, shallow and transparent waters, and rocks smoothed by the wind. Puntaldia, whose name – lookout or guard point – reveals the strategic importance of the location, is the northern end of the Cinta and represents the continuation of the symbolic beach of San Teodoro. Puntaldia is a destination for enthusiasts of water sports, diving, and golfers. The beach is located in the area south of the modern Marina of Puntaldia around high-level hotels, tourist villages, luxury villas, and golf courses. The residential center is equipped, in addition to the tourist port, with a small square with restaurants, bars, shops, and venues where you can enjoy the summer nightlife. Houses, residences, and other accommodation facilities are perfectly in tune with the Mediterranean green, with the whiteness of the sand, and with the turquoise of the sea. The Puntaldia Golf Club has 9 precision holes for an enchanting course from every point of view. The course opens onto a very green green completely immersed in a true natural paradise that winds along the eastern coast of Sardinia, where meetings and challenges overlook suggestive and unique scenarios between the turquoise of the sea and the blue of the sky, between small inlets and delightful bays. The splendid coastline of Lu Impostu is the northern limit. Here you will find small bays with rocks embellished by the Mediterranean scrub. A jewel of the north-eastern coast of Sardinia, an unspoiled paradise protected by the Marine Protected Area of Tavolara, a 1 km long beach of thin and white sand, made of very fine sand dunes, dotted with junipers, mimosas, thistles, and sea lilies. The southern border of Lu Impostu Capo Capicciolu, beyond which opens the other wonder of San Teodoro: Cala Brandinchi – also called "little Tahiti" as it recalls Polynesian beaches.
Capo Coda Cavallo
Capo Coda Cavallo is a strip of granitic land extending into a stretch of sea sheltered by the imposing mass of Tavolara, the smoothed rocks of Molara, and the picturesque islet of Proratora. One of the most suggestive coastal scenarios of the Mediterranean will appear to you: white sand beaches, coves, islets, lagoons, and infinite nuances of colors. With any wind, you will find a location with calm sea. And underwater another world to discover: the Marine Protected Area of Tavolara and Capo Coda Cavallo are ideal for diving. The peninsula is characterized by sandy inlets and cliffs covered with Mediterranean scrub with intense Mediterranean scents. The beach of Coda Cavallo has a particular shape that gives the promontory its name: the mirror of water in front is so sheltered as to seem a calm and limpid lagoon. At Capo Coda Cavallo you will find four suggestive beaches waiting for you and a panoramic point where you can admire the landscape. Here you can visit four beaches and the small square of the Punta Est village, a breathtaking panoramic point, which faces the sea and the splendid islands of Tavolara, Molara, and Molarotto. The first beach is Salina Bamba. Its name derives from the lagoon behind it where salt was once extracted. In the white sand beach, you will find a bar kiosk with all services. A dirt path through the Mediterranean scrub will lead close to the beach of Baia Salinedda, a little further away, which overlooks Isola Ruja. Cala Suaraccia: this beach is usually sheltered from the winds and has Mediterranean vegetation in the background to protect it. A characteristic of this beach is a small pier from which excursions depart to visit the Marine Protected Area. This beach is commonly called "Beach of the Butterflies" because it is located near one of the oldest tourist complexes in San Teodoro called Villaggio Le Farfalle. The beach of Capo Coda Cavallo, facing the Tyrrhenian Sea, is also known as Punta Est. You can go to this beach on windy days, such as the Ostro or Scirocco, and you will feel sheltered. The small square of the village – reachable by car or through the staircase near the beach, dominates the entire bay with a postcard-worthy panorama. In this splendid panoramic setting, you will find bars, shops, and a restaurant waiting for you.
Punta Molara
It is one of the most renowned areas of San Teodoro. The horizon is almost entirely occupied by the imposing silhouette of the island of Tavolara and the low and regular profile of the island of Molara. Punta Molara is located in the locality of Monte Petrosu, in the municipality of San Teodoro. The shore consists of small sandy stretches alternating with cliffs. In front of the Island of Molara, the small sandy cove opens to a panorama of great beauty.
Porto Rafael
Porto Rafael is a picturesque tourist settlement located right in front of the Archipelago of La Maddalena, at the extreme northern tip of the Island, a few kilometers from Palau and Porto Cervo, the heart of Costa Smeralda. Founded in the Sixties by the Spanish count Rafael Neville de Berlanga del Duero, the village is characterized by a small square, which directly overlooks Cala Inglese, also called 'the pool of Porto Rafael', and by white houses immersed in colorful gardens. It is a renowned destination for summer holidays of a refined international elite tourism and is also a place suitable for families and lovers of relaxation and social life. The center is equipped with all services and is the summer venue for renowned international sailing events. The small marina of Porto Rafael is an ideal landing point for small and large boats, as well as a starting point for excursions among the enchanting islands of the archipelago. A stone's throw from the village, the coastline is dotted with small beaches of pinkish sand and suggestive granite rocks that form authentic natural pools.
