Campolide was once good farmland, with several estates. Along the entire hillside there were olive groves, orchards, and vineyards. Today these hills “hide” a quiet and safe neighborhood, with houses mostly from the 1970s. Almost the whole area is made up of apartment buildings, but there is a very interesting part (the Calçada dos Mestres neighborhood) overlooking the Águas Livres Aqueduct, where we find semi-detached houses with yards. Young people, the elderly, and families live here. There is the flow of those who leave in the morning and return at night, but also of those who spend their day here: a trip to the corner grocery store, or to Amoreiras for other kinds of shopping. Most commerce is concentrated in this center, which a few years ago was the largest in the city. Although it is a calm neighborhood, all the traffic coming from the city center passes through here, heading either south or to the Cascais Line (and vice versa in the morning). And anyone taking that route will come across the Águas Livres Aqueduct, an emblematic and grand 18th-century landmark of Lisbon, a complex system for capturing and distributing water to the city.
