Consumption certificateCovering some 20 square kilometres, S. Domingos de Rana is one of four parishes in the Cascais municipality, along with Alcabideche, União de Cascais e Estoril and União de Carcavelos e Parede. Confirming its remote origins, the settlement of its geographical area contains traces of different periods, from the Palaeolithic to the Medieval, including the Neolithic/Chalcolithic, Bronze/Earth, Roman and Visigothic. The earliest historical references to the territory date back to the Middle Ages, consisting of two documents, one attesting to the existence of Trajouce at the beginning of nationality and the other mentioning a couple in Freiria in 1385. The first known census listed all the main localities in the parish in 1527. At the time, there was already the parish of S. Domingos de Rana, which extended as far as Albarraque and, from 1758, to S. Pedro do Estoril. This area was part of the Municipality of Oeiras until 1838, when it became part of the Municipality of Cascais. Four decades ago, its territory was almost exclusively agricultural, with the predominant crops being wheat, maize, vegetables and vines. The biggest profits came from quarrying stone, which was abundant in the area. In 1983, Prof. Dr. José d'Encarnação wrote that S. Domingos de Rana was "the area richest in cereal crops, little by little threatened by the tentacular advance of urbanisation (...). It is also the second area with the highest industrial concentration, namely in Abóboda".
