The etymology of the place name ‘Barcarena’ is controversial, with several authors suggesting that it may be a corruption of the place name ‘Alcanena’. Barcarena is a place whose occupation dates back to the Late Neolithic period, with buildings dating from the Chalcolithic period. It is the reference point for a known settlement of populations in the area, which originated on the top of the western slope overlooking the valley more than 5,500 years ago, indicating significant development based on an agro-pastoral economy. Barcarena is a village with centuries of history, located in the valley of the Barcarena stream. The village stretches along the east and west banks of the stream of the same name and is flanked by two symmetrical slopes, two hills about 130 metres high, located on both the east and west sides of the village, while the entire valley stretches from north to south, towards the Tagus estuary, with Cabo Espichel and the southern routes of the Portuguese coastline on the horizon.
