Situated on a hill ('clivium') overlooking the Mendrisiotto valley, the Como area and the surrounding hills sloping towards the Lombard plain, it is believed to have been inhabited by the Orobi, a population of Cisalpine Gaul, who inhabited the mountainous region between Lake Como and Lake Garda. Clivio was a colony of the Roman Empire and Caesar established a station there to winter his legions. At the base of the hill on which the old centre stands, flows the Lanza stream, which in its course through the village is called the Clivio stream. Two mills can still be seen along this stream: the Upper Mill, known since 1550, where there was a spinning mill until 1940, and the Lower Mill, of which unfortunately few traces remain. The two hamlets that took their name from these ancient settlements are now being redeveloped by private owners who are enhancing their ancient history. Unlike neighbouring Viggiù and Saltrio, which based their economies on the extraction of sandstone quarries, Clivio was predominantly agricultural. The municipality of Clivio is located in the north-western part of Lombardy, in the province of Varese, from which it is 15 km away. Clivio is also the first settlement on the Monte San Giorgio massif, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2003.
