Set on the western shore of Lake Maggiore in its sunniest stretch, Belgirate is a well-known tourist and holiday resort, located just 2 km from Stresa. Stresa is undoubtedly one of the most famous towns on Lake Maggiore, and one of the most visited tourist destinations in the whole Piedmont region. From here, boats depart to visit the beautiful Borromean Islands: it is impossible not to fall in love with the sumptuous palaces rich in art and history and the splendid, perfectly kept gardens. But Stresa is not only about the Islands; it also offers a lovely historic center enlivened by charming cafés, pastry shops (have you ever tasted the Margheritine di Stresa?) and typical restaurants. The Municipality of Stresa also includes hilly and mountainous areas, foremost among them Mottarone, a mountain about 1,500 m high that in winter becomes a ski resort and in summer offers fine trekking walks as well as adrenaline-filled thrills with Alpyland, a two-seater alpine coaster suspended above the Borromean Gulf. The eastern slope, instead, is home to the Alpinia Botanical Garden, where there are many plant species typical of the alpine and subalpine belt.
