A few kilometers from the border with Switzerland lies the charming town of Cannobio. The ancient village of Roman origin, set between the lake and the mountains, has preserved its historic charm intact; a stroll through the streets of the medieval old town is a must, followed by an aperitif in one of the many bars along the lakeside promenade. The Cannobio Lido is the best known on Lake Maggiore, which in this area has been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag by the Foundation for Environmental Education. A further highlight of this lovely beach is the wind, making it an ideal place for sailing sports, a true paradise for kite-surfing and windsurfing enthusiasts. Just above Cannobio, from the characteristic hamlets of Gurro and Finero, numerous trekking trails set off into the Cannobina Valley, the northern access point to Val Grande National Park, the largest wilderness area in the Alps. The village can be reached via State Road 34, which runs from Gravellona Toce (VB) to the national border with nearby Switzerland, or by hydrofoil and ferry services linking the village with the other municipalities on the lake. From Cannobio it is also possible to take Provincial Road 75 of the Cannobina Valley, which leads into the valley of the same name, from which you can reach Val Vigezzo, the famous Valley of the Painters that enchants visitors with its picturesque scenery.
