Collina d'Oro is the municipality formed by the merge of Agra, Gentilino and Montagnola, which form a hilly area of lush greenery and residential areas in front of the gates of Lugano. Once dominated by romantic little villages in the chestnut forest, it became a noble suburb of the city, which has developed above the industrial area of Grancia and Lake Lugano.
Following the traces of Hermann Hesse
The so called "golden hill" was not only birthplace of many famous architects, but also Hermann Hesse lived here. Since 1997 personal items as well as the works of the world-famous writer can be admired in the Museum of Montagnola. It is one of the most visited museums in Ticino and can be found in the house of Camuzzi, where the Nobel Prize winner lived for many years. Also the nearby literary cafe is appreciated by the international audience and is always worth a visit.
The Hermann-Hesse-path leads visitors through the surroundings of the Collina d'Oro, that Hesse apreciated a lot: through the chestnut woods, romantic alleys, to Grotti and to the cemetery of Gentilino, where he and his wife Ninon found their last rest. Among the highlights of the trail, which can be accompanied by an informative audio guide available at the museum, is the church of Sant'Abbondio, to which leads a cypress-lined walk that is reminiscent of Tuscany.
In addition to this "classic" there are numerous other walking and hiking trails, for example, through the woods to Agra or down to the lake to Figino. From viewpoints, such as the "Sasso delle Parole", you can enjoy wonderful views of the villages of the Malcantone region as far as the peaks of the Valais Alps on the horizon.
The ideal place for families
Due to its proximity to the centre of Lugano as well as the excellent transport links, both to the A2 motorway and to public transport, Collina d'Oro is a desired residential area. Especially for families the municipality is very attractive since many schools are located there. These include, among others, the American private school TASIS, which counts about 700 students from all over the world and is known for its first-class education.
Collina d'Oro is a quiet and secure place where children can grow up carefree. An advantage of the nobel suburb is the availability of generously sized plots and villas with lake view, as well as the low municipal tax. Real estate prices have remained relatively stable over the past two years. As a rise in prices is expected in the future, now is the perfect time to invest in real estate in Collina d'Oro.
