The Canton Zug - Tax Oasis of Switzerland

Zug is a canton in German-speaking Switzerland and is part of the Central Switzerland Region (Central Switzerland) and the Zurich Metropolitan Region. Zug is one of smallest cantons in Switzerland, but with a population of 126'837 (31 December 2018) and 500 inhabitants per square kilometre it has a high population density by Swiss standards.

Zug is the capital and at the same time the largest town in the canton. The canton of Zug is also divided into eleven municipalities:

Baar

• Location: Baar is - depending on the perspective - the gateway to Central Switzerland or the connecting to the neighbouring canton of Zurich. The municipality borders on the city of Zug.

• Size: Approx. 24'600 inhabitants

• Tax rate: 53 %

• Infrastructure: The excellent infrastructure in Baar with all major Swiss banks, doctors, shopping facilities, post office and restaurants is very well developed. All types of schools as well as the International School of Zug/ISZL are also located in Baar. The region offers many green spaces, forests, leisure facilities (including the lido Lättich) and recreational space. The excellently developed location with its proximity to large centers such as Zurich and Lucerne is of great economic importance. Zurich and Lucerne are about 30 minutes away by car, Zurich airport about 45 minutes.​

Cham

• Location: Cham, beautifully situated on Lake Zug and close to the city of Zug, is an attractive place to live and work and the third largest municipality in the canton.

• Size: Approx. 16'000 inhabitants

• Tax rate: 59 %

• Infrastructure: Particularly noteworthy is the idyllic "Villette Park" directly on Lake Zug as well as the renowned "St. Andreas Clinic" with its medical center. In addition, Cham is known for numerous sporting and cultural events, as well as the rich offer of leisure activities and local recreational opportunities. The primary and secondary schools are in the village, the grammar school in Zug and the International School in Cham itself or in the neighbouring Hünenberg. Cham has excellent connections to the cities of Zug, Zurich and Lucerne. It takes about 10 minutes to Zug and about 30 minutes to Zurich and Lucerne.​

Hünenberg

• Location: The popular community of Hünenberg is divided into Hünenberg See, which lies directly on Lake Zug, and Hünenberg Dorf, which is adjacent to the south and west. Thanks to far-sighted planning, the municipality has developed into a preferred place to live with a growing population.

• Size: Approx. 9'000 inhabitants

• Tax rate: 65 %

• Infrastructure: Many well-known companies as well as the high school campus of the International School have settled in the industrial area "Bösch/Rothus". Public primary and secondary schools, recreational facilities and shops for daily needs, banks and the post office are also located in the village. The city of Zug as well as Lucerne are very close (approx. 20 minutes by car). Zurich can be reached in about 35 minutes and Zurich airport in about 45 minutes.​

Menzingen

• Location: Menzingen is situated in the pre-Alpine region above Zug and forms the transition from Canton Zug to Canton Zurich in the direction of Schindellegi/Feusisberg. Magnificent views of Lake Zug, the mountains of Central Switzerland and the lovely green hilly landscape alternate.

• Size: Approx. 5'000 inhabitants

• Tax rate: 65 %

• Infrastructure: The protected landscape offers a beautiful recreation and hiking area. The community is nevertheless well connected by public and private transport and last but not least it has a progressive infrastructure with various shopping facilities, a bakery, a butcher's shop, a bank, a post office, various restaurants and doctors. The grammar school in Menzingen and the public schools enjoy an excellent reputation. Zug is about 15 minutes away, Lucerne and Zurich about 40 minutes and Zurich airport about 50 minutes.​

Neuheim

• Location: Neuheim is a family-friendly village in a rural setting. The village is located away from through traffic and in the middle of green countryside between Baar and Sihlbrugg, the border to the canton of Zurich.

• Size: Approx. 2'100 inhabitants

• Tax rate: 61 %

• Infrastructure: The small size, an active village life and an open-minded population give the community a special charm. For everyday shopping there is a Volg supermarket, a Raiffeisen and a cantonal bank, a post office, cafés and restaurants. The primary school as well as the secondary school can be attended in Neuheim itself. The grammar school is located in Zug or Menzingen and the International School in the neighbouring Baar. Thanks to the convenient location, Zug is quickly reachable (approx. 10 minutes) and to Lucerne or Zurich it takes approx. 30-40 minutes.​

Oberägeri

• Location: On the sunny side of life, above the fog, recharge your batteries and still reach the crucial centers quickly - that's what Oberägeri offers in the Aegeri Valley, about 5 minutes from Unterägeri and about 15 minutes from Zug.

• Size: Approx. 7,000 inhabitants

• Tax rate: 60 %

• Infrastructure: In addition to beautiful scenery and nature, the community offers all the services and infrastructure needed for relaxed living. Neighbourly contacts, numerous clubs and the new Ägeri bath characterize the village life. Public schools are within walking distance in the village itself. Risch-Rotkreuz

• Location: The municipality of Risch consists of the four villages of Risch, Buonas, Holzhäusern and Rotkreuz and is located west of Lake Zug. The whole area with well-known company headquarters and beautiful residential areas is the ideal base for private and professional goals.

Steinhausen

• Location: The municipality of Steinhausen is nestled in the Lorzen plain, not far from Lake Zug, between the city of Zug and the third largest cantonal community of Cham.

Unterägeri

• Location: Surrounded by green hills, the village is nestled in a magnificent pre-Alpine landscape on the shores of Lake Aegeri, only about 10 minutes drive above the city of Zug.

• Infrastructure: Rich in tradition, Unterägeri also has a modern facet. • Location: Situated directly on Lake Zug, south of Zug and known for its sweet chestnut trees, vines and even fig trees, Walchwil is unique with its mild climate. The village is one of the most attractive in the canton of Zug and has excellent hillside locations with lake and Mount Rigi view.

• Size: Approx. 4'000 inhabitants

• Infrastructure: The compact size, an open population (approx. 34% expats) and the spectacular hillside locations give Walchwil a special charm. For everyday shopping, there is a small supermarket as well as a Raiffeisen and a cantonal bank, a post office, cafés and restaurants. Up to secondary level, school can be attended in Walchwil itself. The grammar school is located in Zug and international schools in Zug or Baar. Zug

• Location: Zug is a globalized, international small town in the heart of Switzerland and the capital of the same-named canton Zug. The city is located on the beautiful Lake Zug, offers proximity to the mountains and major cities such as Zurich and Lucerne.

Arth (SZ)

• Location: The municipality of Arth is located in the equally tax-friendly Canton of Schwyz, at the southern end of Lake Zug, nestled between the highest mountain in the Canton of Zug, the "Wildspitz", and the excursion and tourist destination of the "Rigi".

• Size: Approx. 12'000 inhabitants

• Infrastructure: Arth-Goldau offers a wide range of shopping facilities, banks, the post office, cafés and restaurants for daily needs. Further offers can be found in the capital Schwyz. The primary as well as the secondary school are located in Arth. The grammar school is attended in Schwyz. For leisure activities, the nature and animal park Goldau, a wide network of hiking trails as well as Lake Zug and Lake Lauerz for swimming are available. It takes about 15 minutes to get to Zug or Schwyz, 45 minutes to Zurich, 30 minutes to Lucerne and about 60 minutes to Zurich Airport.

• Location: Immensee is located southwest of Lake Zug, also in the canton of Schwyz, only about 10 minutes drive from Arth and Küssnacht am Rigi.

Küssnacht am Rigi (SZ)

• Location: The district of Küssnacht is idyllically situated on the northeastern arm of Lake Lucerne and at the foot of the majestic Mount Rigi.

• Size: Approx. 10'000 inhabitants

• Infrastructure: The municipality offers a solid selection of stores for daily needs. Banks, the post office and restaurants are also to be found. All public schools can be attended in the village, the grammar school either in Immensee or in Schwyz. The historical "Hohle Gasse" (hollow alley) from Wilhelm Tell's story offers a very special recreational experience and the hiking and winter sports areas Seebodenalp and Rigi as well as the 18-hole golf course Küssnacht am Rigi are right on the doorstep. Lake Lucerne and Lake Zug are also inviting for a refreshing swim. To Zug, Schwyz or Lucerne you drive about 20 minutes, to Zurich 45 minutes and to Zurich Airport 50 minutes.​

Merlischachen (SZ)

• Location: The geranium-decorated farmhouses in the village center are the emblem of the geranium village Merlischachen, which is situated on Lake Lucerne next to Küssnacht am Rigi and Meggen (canton Lucerne).
