The best places in Portugal, the diverse landscape and the culture

Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve coast – we know them all! So how about a few insider travel tips for the land of the discoverers?

Let’s start with Sintra, a picturesque region 25 kilometres west of the capital city of Lisbon. The town is known especially for its century old palaces, which attract visitors from around the world. Furthermore, the Cultural Landscape of Sintra was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1995. Apart from numerous quaint Portuguese cafes and restaurants, this is also where the 1,000-year-old Palácio Nacional de Sintra is located. A visit to the palace is definitely worthwhile!

Further north is something of interest for book lovers. The beautiful old town of Porto accommodates one of the most beautiful book stores in the world. The interior is made from wood, the ceiling consists of a huge stained glass window, and a curved wooden staircase leads to the upper floor. In Porto, you can also enjoy romantic strolls through the picturesque old town or indulge in a cup of coffee at one of the cafes with views of the Douro and Vila Nova da Gaia, the city on the other side of the river where the famous port wine cellars are located.

A home by the sea on the Atlantic coast

The famous Algarve coast is located right in the south of Portugal. Characterised by steep costs, fine sandy beaches and mystic caverns, this region offers a wide range of recreational activities. Tip: take a kayak trip to explore the partly undiscovered caves along the coast! Other exciting outdoor activities include dolphin watching on the Atlantic, stand-up paddling in Lagos and cliff hiking with sea views along the Praia do Amado.

The Portuguese city of Albufeira is also located on the Algarve coast. The romantic alleyways of the old town with their countless shops, boutiques and cafes round out the unique charm of the town. If you prefer a stroll on the beach to the hustle and bustle of the old town, there are two beaches in Albufeira to choose from: Praia do Peneco and Praia dos Pescadores.
