Why the Algarve?

The Algarve is the southernmost region of mainland Portugal and has a mild Mediterranean-like microclimate with over 300 days of sunshine per year and maximum temperatures ranging from 15º in winter to 35º in summer, which makes the Algarve one of the best beach and golf destinations in Europe.

The Algarve is mostly known for its beautiful beaches, where the crystal clear blue-green water lines secretive rocky coves, impressive cliff-lined bays and vast strips of sand and dunes that stretch along the coast.

From the stunning coast to the tree-lined hills in the countryside, the Algarve has much more to offer. In fact, you will hardly ever get bored, as there are plenty of cultural events and outdoor activities, such as bird watching, boat trips along the coast with visits to the caves, bike rides, hikes along signposted paths along the coast, guided tours in the most diverse historical áreas (there are several archaeological sites). Furthermore, sports enthusiasts will find that most modalities are represented throughout the region.

Because of its exceptional environment, the Algarve has attracted innumerous tourists over the years and ultimately become “home” to many nationals and foreigners. As a result, the local population is currently a unique blend of Portuguese and expatriates, ranging from young entrepreneurs who decided to avail of the blooming economy and start-up a business, to pensioners who decided to invest their hard-earned money and enjoy their retirement to the fullest.

Alvor

Traditionally a fishermen’s village, Alvor graces the riverfront of Ria de Alvor, a natural reserve home to a large variety of (protected) species of flora and fauna, that can be found all around its beaches, dunes, estuaries, agricultural land and salt marshes.

Combining historical buildings and modern developments, the charming village of Alvor has plenty of restaurants, bars, cafés, boutiques and shops, at walking distance from its beautiful beach, which is also connected to Praia dos Três Irmãos, bearing a blue flag and “Gold Quality” designation, awarded by Quercus.

Surrounding Alvor, are several luxury residential developments, comprising high-end apartment buildings, townhouses and sumptuous exclusive villas, as well as hotel and golf developments, such the Pestana Golf Academy and the Pestana Alto Golf.

At just a few minutes’ drive from the village and beaches, lies the widely renowned Penina Hotel & Golf Resort (voted Portugal's Leading Golf Resort by the World Travel Awards), comprising residential villas and three golf courses, including The Sir Henry Cotton Championship Course (the1st 18 hole course constructed in the Algarve), all set in an amazing 500 acre estate of natural surroundings.

Ferragudo

Not withstanding the increasing tourism, Ferragudo has managed to keep its authentic charm throughout the years.

Located on the estuary of the Arade river and flanked on one side by the fishermen’s beach, the village spreads down the hill from the church atop, wonder down through the charming network of small streets with restaurants, bars, cafés, boutiques and shops.

For those who love the beach, Ferragudo offers at least five options: Praia da Angrinha, Praia Grande, Praia do Pintadinho, Praia do Molhe and Praia dos Caneiros, which bears a blue flag and “Gold Quality” designation, awarded by Quercus.

Due to its privileged positioning, Ferragudo has several coastal developments and exclusive villas with a breathtaking sea view, in a variety of traditional, contemporary and modern architecture.

Portimão

As one of the biggest cities in the Algarve, Portimão bustles all year round.

Stretching to the north and west of the estuary of the Arade river, Portimão developed from its historical centre near the quay, to the extensive suburbs with an array of business-, commerce- and trade-related establishments, including hotels, shopping malls and all possible amenities.

The historical centre spreads out from the main square near the Nossa Senhora da Conceição church and Colégio dos Jesuítas building, towards the ruins of the São Francisco convent, by the quay.

Mostly known for its fabulous fish restaurants and ice-cream parlours, the quay’s pedestrian avenue complements and connects to the traditional shopping and main streets of the historical centre and its cultural attractions.

The cargo port and pictureque Marina harbour for recreational vessels reflect the city’s bond to the ocean, which was once carefully guarded by the occupants of the Santa Catarina Fortress that still stands today at the eastern edge of Praia da Rocha.

Praia da Rocha is one of the most well-known beaches of the Algarve, with its impressive cliffs and rock formations overlooked by a touristic promenade with hotels (such as the internationally renowned Bela Vista Hotel & Spa, Jupiter Algarve Hotel and the Algarve Casino Hotel), apartments, shops, restaurants, cafés, bars and clubs that buzz with nightlife.

During the summer, Praia da Rocha becomes even more of a hotspot, as the sumptuous parties held by the exclusive beach clubs, like NoSoloÁgua and Blanco, attract thousands of visitors.

Portimão is a definite favourite of beach goers for having plenty of options like Praia dos Três Castelos, Praia dos Careanos, Praia do Vau, Praia do Barranco das Canas and Praia do Alemão.

In addition to several other attractions, Portimão also offers the Algarve International Circuit, with a karting track, off-road track, technology park, sports complex, hotel (Pestana Algarve Race Hotel & Resort) and apartments (Pestana Algarve Race Apartments).

Along the coast and inwards, there are many residential developments, comprising a large variety of properties, such as luxury apartment buildings, townhouses and exclusive villas, mostly of contemporary and modern architecture, within just a few minutes’ drive from all amenities.

Silves

Occasionally overlooked because of its inland location, the beautiful city of Silves is full of history, which shows around practically every corner, from the roman bridge that crosses the river at the foot of the hill, all the way up to the medieval castle and church atop.

Silves tends to be a peaceful place, where in the timeworn streets of the old city centre – mainly comprising historical buildings and townhouses – one can find plenty of cultural attractions, shops, restaurants and cafés

The old city centre mainly comprises historical buildings and townhouses. With numerous cultural attractions, only a few shopping streets, but plenty of restaurants and cafés, Silves tends to be a peaceful place.

In and around the city there are mostly apartment buildings, townhouses and villas, whereas some of the most secluded luxury villas, charming cottages and elegant country estates can be found in Silves’ serene countryside.

Surrounding Silves, stretches of vineyards, horticulture and plantation/cultivation agriculture of fertile soils blend into the untouched nature of the beautiful hills.

Monchique

To the north of Portimão, lies the mesmerising sierra of Monchique, its two highest points being Foia and Picota.

Covered in lush vegetation of eucalyptus-, chestnut- and olive trees, sycamores and cork oaks amongst others, Monchique is one of the greenest spots of the Algarve.

The village of Monchique is mostly known for its pure mineral spring water, which can be collected from faucets scattered throughout the sierra, handicrafts, honey and traditional fruit brandy called “medronho”.

Since the Roman era, the thermal waters of Caldas de Monchique have attracted many visitors, whereas over the last decades, hotel investors (such as the Villa Termal das Caldas de Monchique Spa Resort and the Monchique Resort & Spa) have helped to make Monchique into a much sought after spa destination.

The properties vary from apartment buildings and townhouses to secluded luxury villas, charming cottages and elegant country estates.

Golf Destinations around Portimão

The Algarve is considered to be one of the best and popular golf destinations in Europe, which originally stems from The Penina Hotel & Golf Resort (voted Portugal's Leading Golf Resort by the World Travel Awards), which comprises the 18-hole The Sir Henry Cotton Championship Course, the 9-hole Penina Resort Course and the Penina Academy Course.

The prestigious Pestana Golf Resorts operate on four different 18-hole golf courses, Silves Golf, Gramacho & Vale da Pinta near Carvoeiro, and Alto Golf in Alvor.

To the north of Portimão, the Morgado de Reguengo Golf Resort comprises two 18-hole courses at: Álamos and Morgado.

All these golf courses offer a wonderful golf experience all year round due to the excellent maintenance standards and the mild Algarve climate.

Gastronomy

Along the coast or further inland, there are excellent restaurants everywhere.

Although Alvor, Ferragudo and Portimão are widely known for the exquisite cuisine of fresh fish and seafood caught by the local fishermen (one of the most famous dishes is the "cataplana": fish or seafood cooked in a special recipient bearing the same name), whilst Silves and Monchique are most known for the traditional dishes of (game) meat and typical sausages, most restaurants offer a varied menu to everyone’s taste, with particular use of local produce.

Delicious food can be found from even the smallest taverns and bistro’s, to the highquality international cuisine in renowned restaurants in the Portimão area, one of them with 1* Michelin.

Health Care

The Algarve offers excellent health care services, with private clinics of all specialties and private hospitals such as the Hospital de São Camilo in Portimão and the Hospital Particular do Algarve in Alvor, where most staff and doctors are multilingual.

Golden Visa

The Residence Permit for Investment in Portugal aims to attract foreign investments from non-EU citizens. The Golden Visa legislation allows the granting of visas to foreign investors with special conditions and offers attractive solutions for those who wish to invest in the country and benefit from the special tax regime. Engel & Völkers Portimão can help you find the right property for the purpose of meeting these requirements.

Non-Habitual Residency

Portugal is one of the best countries to buy a home as a foreigner, due to the simplified procedures of obtaining a residence permit and the attractive legal provisions for foreign investors. The RNH, or Non-Habitual Residence, is an attractive tax regime which grants its applicants, i.e. the individuals who decide to become residents for tax purposes in Portugal, the status of non-habitual residents and therewith a range of tax benefits. The Portuguese regime is one of the most favorable among the European regimes.
