Piazza Stesicoro is situated in the historical centre of Catania, on the crossing between Via Etnea and Corso Sicilia, just few minutes walking from the Duomo Square. It has a simple rectangular shape and is bounded to the north by Palazzo Tezzano and Palazzo del Toscano, to the east by the Palazzo Beneventano della Corte and by a late 1950s building that houses the Banco di Sicilia, to the west by the Church of Sant'Agata alla Fornace and the Palazzo della Borsa of the fascist epoque, while the south side has some nineteenth-century buildings. In the west part of the square, about ten meters below street level, there is a portion of the Roman amphitheater, brought to light in the early twentieth century. In the east part of the square there is the commemorative statue dedicated to the composer Vincenzo Bellini. Behind it, the square opens onto Corso Sicilia, a modern more than twenty meters wide avenue, built following a gutting between May 1956 and 1958, which involved the partial demolition of the historic district of San Berillo. Corso Sicilia, flanked by a series of new generation blocks of flats, mainly intended for banks, insurance companies and offices, brings to the railway station and local / regional bus terminal. Piazza Stesicoro is one of the busiest squares of the city both for its centrality and for its contiguity with the "Fera 'o Luni" market (the "Monday Fair", according to popular interpretation), a historic city market open throughout the week held on piazza Carlo Alberto and adjoining streets. Since 2016 the underground stop “Stesicoro” connects that area of the historical centre to the rest of the city.
